The S&E Challenge was developed by the University with the assistance of Rotary in 2000 and has grown to serve the whole country reaching over 730 000 Year 10 and Year 6 students so far. Seven high schools and colleges each sent 8 teams of up to 4 students to compete in undertaking engineering, science and logic activities such as building a bridge from balsa wood, wiring a city for efficient electricity distribution, studying traditional fish traps, planning a project and others. This year's participating schools were Goulburn, Mulwaree, Crookwell, Yass and Murrumburrah High Schools, Boorowa Central School and Trinity College. The winning school was Yass High School who may go on to the State Challenge and maybe the National Grand Challenge. On the day 200 students, 12 teachers, 35 volunteers and 2 UoN Challenge staff took part to expose the students to engineering and science as exciting rewarding careers so that they might choose STEM streams for their HSC years. The Rotary Clubs and Engineers Australia wish to thank all of the students, teachers, University of Newcastle staff and all of our fabulous volunteers for making this event so enjoyable and successful. We especially want to thank our Sponsors whose financial support has made it possible to stage this event. Their logos are displayed. Your support for those businesses will back their support for your community and our children.
